Clinical and Ultrasonographic Correlation of Deep Vein Thrombosis of the Lower Extremities

Abstract

Introduction: Deep vein thrombosis is a common condition in medical practice, one that is of particular importance due to its potentially fatal complications, such as pulmonary embolism, and highly disabling complications, such as post-phlebitic syndrome.

Objective: To evaluate the relationship between the results of a risk stratification questionnaire and the diagnosis by Doppler ultrasound in patients with deep vein thrombosis of the lower extremities.

Methods: A cross-sectional, analytical observational study was conducted on a cohort of 149 patients treated at the Angiology and Vascular Surgery Department of the “Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola” Provincial General Teaching Hospital in Ciego de Ávila, from February 2022 to June 2025.

Results: It was observed that 145 patients tested positive on Doppler ultrasound, representing 97.3% of the total. The overall mean age of the cohort was 58.4 years, with a standard deviation of 15.8 years. Females accounted for 64.8% of the positive cases. Moderate probability was the most common finding, with 97 cases, accounting for 65.1% of the total; similarly, there was a percentage majority in both groups, with 64.8% of those who tested positive on Doppler ultrasound and 75.0% of those who tested negative falling into this category.

Conclusions: Advanced adulthood and female gender were predominant, regardless of the Doppler ultrasound diagnosis, in which nearly all patients tested positive. The majority of patients presented a moderate probability of deep vein thrombosis, regardless of whether the Doppler ultrasound was positive.
