Nursing Care in Cardiac Surgery: A Holistic Approach based on Kristen Swanson's Theory

Abstract

Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide. Cardiac surgery is a key therapeutic intervention, the success of which depends on the comprehensive care provided by the nursing professional working during cardiac surgery.

Objective: To analyze the role of the nursing professional in care from a holistic perspective, grounded in Kristen Swanson's theory.

Methods: A descriptive literature review was conducted with a systematic search of publications between 2020 and 2025 in the electronic databases PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, Google Scholar, and SciELO.

Results: Kristen Swanson's theory is outlined through the modulation between the theoretical basis, the Nursing Process, and holistic care in cardiac surgery.

Conclusions: The holistic care provided by the nursing professional promotes the knowledge, recovery, and rehabilitation of patients undergoing cardiac surgery.
