Introduction: Diabetic foot is one of the most serious complications of diabetes mellitus, as it is the leading cause of non-traumatic lower limb amputation. Heberprot-P® is a recombinant human epidermal growth factor used to promote the healing of diabetic foot ulcers.
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of Heberprot-P® in the treatment of ischemic diabetic foot in patients at the Specialty Polyclinic of the “Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola” Provincial General Teaching Hospital in Ciego de Ávila.
Methods: A cross-sectional, analytical, and correlational study was conducted on 35 patients diagnosed with ischemic diabetic foot, treated between February 2025 and January 2026. Demographic and clinical variables, administered doses, and surgical procedures were analyzed. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used (Student’s t-test and Mann-Whitney U test).
Results: Female patients predominated (57.1%), with a mean age of 70.7 years. 42.9% of the patients had had diabetes for between 10 and 19 years. The most common lesion grade was Wagner grade 4 (42.9%). 71.4% required between 1 and 10 doses of Heberprot-P®. The surgical procedures performed were toe amputation (48.6%) and debridement (40.0%). Infection was significantly associated with a longer hospital stay (p = 0.000). 85.7% of patients did not develop an infection during treatment.
Conclusions: Heberprot-P® proved to be an effective and safe therapy for the treatment of ischemic diabetic foot, as it promotes healing and reduces the need for major surgical procedures, thereby contributing to limb preservation in the study population.
