Introduction: Renal artery embolization is a minimally invasive endovascular procedure of choice for patients with renal tumors that do not allow regular surgical therapy.
Objective: To characterize patients with renal tumors treated with transarterial embolization according to the type of intervention.
Methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted, with retrospectively recorded data from 30 patients who received transarterial embolization procedures at the Imaging Service of "Hermanos Ameijeiras" Clinical Surgical Hospital in the period 2019-2022. The sample was characterized according to the description of the variables of interest.
Results: A total of 31 procedures were performed, as one patient (3.3%) had tumor involvement in both kidneys; of the rest, 9 (30%) in the right kidney and 20 (66.7%) in the left. A total of 22 (70.9%) preoperative transarterial embolization procedures were performed on the same number of patients (73.3%). The series was predominantly male (63.6%), with a mean age of 54.2 years and 45.4% with white skin. Palliative embolization procedures were 9 (29%) in groups of 8 patients (26.7%). It was prevalent in women (77.8%), mixed race (50%) and an average age of 74 years. Metastatic activity was observed in 85.7% of cases. In both groups, there was minimal bleeding and optimal surgical time, and there were no immediate complications.
Conclusions: Embolized patients, regardless of age, sex, skin color and disease progression, as well as the type of indication (presurgical or palliative), presented favorable conditions during surgery, which avoided the presence of complications in interventional procedures.Downloads
