Impact of the Binomial Information Literacy and Scientific Research in Angiology and Vascular Surgery Residents

Abstract

Introduction: Scientific research is a cornerstone for training under the residence regime in Cuba. After a diagnosis was performed, insufficiencies were found in the search and use of scientific information for their research by angiology and vascular surgery residents.

Objective: To describe the results of an information literacy course for angiology and vascular surgery residents and its impact on scientific research.

Methods: A descriptive, longitudinal, prospective, descriptive and observational study with a preexperimental component (before-after) was carried out at Hospital Provincial General Docente Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola, of Ciego de Avila, in the academic years from 2014 to 2023. The study universe was made up of 18 residents in the study period. Descriptive and inferential statistical methods were used (hypothesis test of ranges with Wilcoxon signs).

Results: The search for scientific information by the residents after the implementation of the information literacy course was evaluated as adequate, with significant differences (p = 0.001). The relevance and validity of the bibliographic references used in the research was rated as adequate in 85 % of the written reports. The achieved level of self-management and self-training was excellent in 83 % of the residents evaluated in their different aspects. 100 % of the residents were satisfied with the course, a fact reflected in the focus group.

Conclusions: The impact is revealed through the transformations achieved in the scientific research process. The relevance of information literacy and its contribution to the solution of the stated problem is reaffirmed.
