Abstract

Introduction: In its trajectory, the femoral vein establishes anatomical relationships, which allows its approach by means of the technique of anatomical repairs.

Objective: To evaluate the behavior of femoral venous catheterization in patients with burns and admitted to the plastic surgery and caumatology service at Hospital Universitario Manuel Ascunce Domenech, in Camagüey.

Methods: An observational, analytical and retrospective study was carried out in patients with burns, during the period 2019-2022. The study population consisted of 63 patients aged 20 years and older, with catheterization using the Seldinger's method and by means of the technique of anatomical repairs. Descriptive statistical tests were applied for frequency distribution. When the stadigraph showed a p value lower than 0.05, odds ratio and confidence interval were calculated. For quantitative variables, mean and standard deviation were found.

Results: The mean age was 49.9 years and the female sex predominated, accounting for 55.6 %. Rapid hydroelectrolytic replacement was the main indication, accounting for 84.1 %. No accidents were reported. The average catheter dwell time was 7.38 days. Catheters that remained more than seven days were up to seven times more likely to present complications (OR: 7.778). Lumen obstruction was reported in one catheter; infection, in 10 patients; and deep vein thrombosis, in 4.

Conclusions: Femoral vein catheterization using the Seldinger's method and by means of the anatomical repair technique was safe and effective. Complications were due to catheter permanence and not to the catheterization technique.
