Introduction: Historical events never happen in a vacuum; they are always located in a time (when) and a space (where). To these coordinates, a third one can be added: the protagonists (who).
Objective: To describe the historical evolution of the specialty of angiology and vascular surgery in the province of Ciego de Ávila, as well as those who founded, built and carry it forward.
Methods: Theoretical level methods were used: historical-logical and analytical-synthetic. The techniques of bibliographic review were used for the sources of information and bibliographic filing. Content methods were also used, for the control of the information. Interviews were conducted with personalities linked to the specialty, in order to enrich the history.
Results: The history of angiology in Ciego de Ávila comes from Camagüey, in 1962, when it was a municipality of that province. Later, in 1966, the first vascular disease care activity was established in Ciego; and, in 1973, in the region of Morón. Since 1986, medical assistance has been provided in Ciego de Ávila as a province of the central region of Cuba, with several preventive-curative programs in several diseases up to the present, with particular attention to diabetic foot.
Conclusions: At present, there is a solid angiology and vascular surgery service, supported by the Council of Scientific Societies and the provincial chapter of the specialty, in view of increasing teaching, medical care and research, which rewrites the history with semblances and obituaries of angiology in the province of Ciego de Ávila.
