Abstract

Introduction: Abdominal aortic aneurysm constitutes the most common true arterial aneurysm. The prevalence in developed countries is 5%. The diagnosis is made with imaging studies that demonstrate the aneurysm in the suspected patient on the basis of risk factors or physical examination.

Objective: To describe the diagnostic and therapeutic management of ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Methods: Different bibliographic sources obtained from search engines such as PubMed, Trip, Scopus and Google Scholar were used, through the following keywords and MeSH terms: Aneurysm, abdominal aorta, endovascular and vascular prosthesis. In the end, 28 were selected for the completion of this review article.

Conclusions: The mortality rate remains high for individuals who suffer ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm. However, in recent times, this rate has decreased in part because scheduled repair before the onset of symptoms has been shown to be the most effective method of preventing rupture and fatal outcome. This is related to the sudden presence of an aneurysm.
