Introduction: Venous insufficiency ulcers in lower limbs are a serious health problem worldwide, accounting for approximately 85 % of all vascular ulcers and affecting about 2 % of the world population. The Cuban drug Heberprot-P®, the only one of its kind, is oriented to the healing of deep and complex ulcers, by stimulating tissue granulation and accelerated epithelization.
Objective: To present the results obtained with the intrathecal application of Heberprot-P® in complex varicose ulcers.
Case presentation: A male patient is presented, white, 58 years old, with a history of having undergone, approximately 6 years ago, surgery for fracture of the right tibial plateau Schatzker 5. Due to an accident at work, he was admitted to the orthopedics and traumatology service with a diagnostic impression of bimalleolar fracture of the right ankle, surgically corrected. Weeks later, he began to present bimalleolar lesions, for which he was treated with steroids and antibiotics; even so, it became ulcerated and infected. He was assessed by the angiology and vascular surgery service of Hospital Provincial Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola, of Ciego de Ávila; a complex venous ulcer was identified, and treated with Heberprot-P® for its healing.
Conclusions: The intrathecal application of Heberprot-P® proved to be highly effective in the healing of both venous ulcers suffered by the patient, as a complete granulation was achieved in both lesions.
