Abstract

Introduction: Peripheral arterial disease develops due to reduced blood flow at the arterial level. Its main cause is atherosclerosis, resulting from the accumulation of lipids and fibrous material between the layers of the arterial wall in the lower extremities.

Objective: To present an updated review on the topic.

Methods: A search of the specialized literature in the discipline, in English and Spanish, from the last 15 years.

Results: Twenty-three articles were selected from the main journals specializing in the discipline, and the topic was structured academically, from the definition to current management strategies.

Conclusions: This type of review is considered very helpful for non-specialist and primary care physicians, as it can be a useful tool for establishing a better diagnostic approach in the early stages of PAD, which can be useful in reducing its morbidity and mortality.

Keywords: peripheral arterial disease; risk factors; endothelial cell dysfunction; atherosclerosis; intermittent claudication; arterial ischemia.
