Abstract

Introduction: Lipedema is a disease that affects women. It is characterized by the abnormal deposition of subcutaneous adipose tissue, which is painful and causes a feeling of heaviness in the lower extremities, without affecting the feet, hands, or trunk. It is often mistaken with lymphedema and obesity.

Objective: To present an updated review on lipedema.

Methods: A search was conducted of the specialized literature in the field, in English and Spanish, from the last 15 years.

Results: Twenty-five articles from the leading specialized journals in the field were selected, and the topic was structured academically, from definition to current management strategies.

Conclusions: Lipedema has been gaining scientific and public interest in recent years. Therefore, awareness, early diagnosis, and proper management are necessary to prevent its progression, complications, impairment of quality of life, and comorbidities.
