Periodontitis and its Association with Peripheral Arterial Disease
Keywords:
periodontitis; peripheral arterial disease; oral health; atherosclerosisAbstract
Introduction: Periodontitis and peripheral arterial disease are prevalent chronic disorders that share common risk factors and inflammatory mechanisms.
Objective: To critically analyze the scientific evidence on the association between periodontitis and peripheral arterial disease.
Methods: A literature review was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Redalyc, and VHL, following PRISMA criteria, including original studies and reviews from 2000-2025.
Results: The analysis was organized into five thematic axes: common risk factors, pathophysiological mechanisms, epidemiological and clinical evidence, clinical implications, and future perspectives.
Conclusions: Periodontitis may contribute to the onset and progression of peripheral arterial disease through systemic inflammation, endotelial dysfunction, and oxidative stress; in turn, peripheral arterial disease may worsen periodontal health. A multidisciplinary clinical approach and further longitudinal research are recommended.
