Internal Jugular Vein Thrombosis and Mediastinal Tumor
Keywords:
thrombosis; internal jugular vein; mediastinal tumorAbstract
Deep vein thrombosis can present itself in various forms, including thrombosis of the upper limbs; thrombosis of the internal jugular vein being one of the rarest forms, with an incidence of 0.5-3.4%. This study presents a case of internal jugular vein thrombosis treated at the Phlebology Service of the Institute of Angiology and Vascular Surgery. Physical examination and ultrasound confirmed deep vein thrombosis of the internal jugular vein of the left upper limb. Imaging studies (X-ray and tomography) were performed to detect the cause. A mediastinal tumor was found. Although jugular vein thrombosis is one of the least common forms of venous thromboembolic disease and is generally associated with excessive exertion or local neck infections, it should also be noted that the presence of mediastinal tumors can cause it and be seen in adulthood, as in this case.
